Directing & Producing Experience

“The Flight” — Writer/Producer/Actress, 2013-present Shelah Marie wrote, performed and independently produced The Flight in 2013, 2014 and 2015 for Black History Month in partnership with Branch Street Productions. The Flight is a fast-paced satirically journey through the many intersections between blackness and femaleness and where you find yourself in the middle of all that.The Flight has been performed at The University of Northern Iowa, Furman University, Dixon Place Experimental Theater, The Barboa Poetry Club and The African Burial Ground National Monument.

“Ordinary Affects” —Writer/Director, 2011, Wrote and directed an original playlet about family, psychological torture and the relationship between love and abuse.

“The Long Hallway” — Performer/Producer, 2011, Curated an evening of original performances including short plays, live music and film at 1242 Pacific Productions in Brooklyn, New York.

“My Brother’s Keeper” – Assistant Producer, Director – Florida State University (2005-2007) Played the role of “Dorian” in a student-produces drama series as well as a member of the production team. Applied for state grant applications and searched for other possible sources of funding.

Black Actor’s Guild – Artistic Director –Florida State University (2005-2008) Created and directed over 20 pieces that collectively centered around the modern African-American experience. Directed the first full production the company produced since the previous year. Created a staple original performance, “Stream of Consciousness” a mash-up style show that uses textual deconstruction, comedy, dance and improvisation to provide a unique theatrical experience.


Professional Experience

The Sustainable Theater Workshop — Creator/Facilitator (2012-present)

Created, facilitated and funded a three-week workshop that gave San Rafael students the theatrical tools to compose and perform an original play to be independently published in the U.S. post-workshop. Shelah also facilitated a version of the workshop in 2013 in Jamaica and in 2014 in partnership with The United Nations.

The New Victory Theater -- Teaching Artist, New York, (2013-present)

Perform workshops around New Victory Theater programming as a part of a team teaching based ensemble in all five boroughs. 

The Theater Development Fund — Teaching Artist, New York (2012– 2015)

Create a drama-based curriculum around the show Once, for a group of 9-11th grade students. By the end of the residency the students will have created original musicals in the style of the show Once.

The Harlem Children’s Zone – Drama Specialist, Harlem, New York (2010 – 2015)

Implement creative dramatic lesson plans for grades K-6 that focuses on personal narratives, original content and the creative process. Curriculum is designed to provide a concrete foundation in theatrical techniques and to enhance self-confidence, communication skills and validate imaginative processes.

Arts & Culture Center of Hollywood –Drama Specialist, Hollywood, FL (2009-2010)

Created Sunshine State standard lesson plans for three consecutive two-week long drama camps for children ages 6-12. Each lesson culminated in a final performance in which the students aided in creating costumes, set design and musical content for the performances.

Camp Adventure – Drama Coordinator, Hohenfels, Germany (2008)

Created and implemented drama camps for the children of Army officials on the Hohenfels Army Base. The Creative Drama camps focused on using theatrical techniques to improve speech, communication skills and build self-esteem.


Education

Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, Performance Studies, June 2011

Thesis Project: Little Miracles: Creating Performance and Hybrid Performance Pedagogy in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Created and implemented a five-week workshop with Brooklyn-based homeless youth aged eleven to fourteen. The focus of the curriculum was to deconstruct racialized narratives through play and hybrid theatrical techniques.
